mBank

Anchoring the corner of the urban square development, Liberty Way, the 23,248 sf mBank accommodates retail banking on the first floor that features an inviting fireplace lobby area. Richly appointed commercial lending and executive offices are located on the second floor. A vertical circulation tower connects all the floors to a large underground parking garage.

The overall design aesthetic is reflective of the rhythm of Marquette's historic buildings and includes use of the reddish sandstone native to the area. This design aligns with mBank's U.P.-based roots and further supports the institution's goal of making this facility its regional headquarters.

The Attic

The Attic

The Attic, a nightclub and event venue located on the second floor of the River North hotspot, American Junkie, is housed in an industrial-chic space that features a retractable roof and street front facade that opens onto Illinois Street.

Modern details pay tribute to the epitome of the 'American experience' by combining rugged accents with sophisticated finishes and culminating in a back-lit wall emblazoned with the American flag that plays the role of the nightclub's backdrop.

A retractable skylight infuses the nightclub with light and fresh air. The skylight enhances the guest experience affording breathtaking views of the Chicago skyline.

Multiple, full-service bars define the layout; a circular bar was designed to allow for maximum elbow room during shows on the club's raised platform stage. The 140,000 mw sound system, combined with stylish furnishings and lighting systems, evokes an energy and ambiance conducive to the entertainment goals our client desired.

American Junkie

Located in Chicago’s River North area, American Junkie is over 12,000 square feet of excitement sprawling over two levels. The 320-seat restaurant pays tribute to the epitome of the ‘American experience’ by combining rugged details with classic moments.

As an infill project, bringing natural light into the main spaces was our biggest challenge. This was accomplished through the use of overhead doors off the main dining space.

American Junkie’s seating layout is a combination of banquets along the perimeter and open dining that can shift to cater to the masses. Multiple full service bars define the layout; on the first floor, it is used to spatially break up the dining layout of the restaurant.

North Shore Shingle-Style

After collaborating on the design of a new summer home for this family, our client asked that we again work together to conceive a new primary residence evoking the same level of architectural significance. Featuring a traditional/classic shingle-style aesthetic, this residence accommodates the family’s everyday needs within two-stories plus a 4,500 sf finished basement and 400 sf, two-car garage.

Through the first-floor entry foyer, a great room with a grand fireplace and views to the rear terrace creates an axis by which the floor plan evolves. Entertaining comfortably, the kitchen, dining room and sitting area are all organized off the west side of the great room, while the primary bedroom suite, outfitted with a fireplace, separate closets and master bath, is organized off the east side of the great room.

Three bedrooms with attached full baths and two guest bedrooms are found on the second floor joined by family-oriented spaces including a play area and sitting area.

One more guest bedroom with an attached full bath is located on the basement level along with a variety of specialty spaces that meet the needs of this active and growing family. The specialty spaces include a recreation room with a fireplace and bar, a wine cellar and tasting room, a craft room, and a children’s play area.

First Insurance Funding

First Insurance Funding

An extensive interior renovation was executed for this one-story 10,500 sf existing structure in a large suburban office park. The design fulfills the spatial needs of this growing financial services company and serves as a satellite for their primary facility located in a three building suite in the same office park. A complete consolidation and reorganization of several existing tenant spaces originally housed in the building allowed for new interior office spaces for three corporate divisions with ample conference and training facilities.

The reorganization extended to company culture as well, where workstation design and fewer private offices contributed to the open floor plan, promoting collaboration and improving daylight harvesting. Each division area is effectively isolated from the others, but connected by a central, curved spine. This inviting corridor doubles as an informal meeting area, housing a colorful internally illuminated backdrop of edge-lit resin panels suspended in a custom framework.

Modern Sustainability

The goal of this remodel focused on updates to the interior and exterior of the home that reflect a clean and contemporary feel while creating a deeper sense of family and togetherness. This was achieved through room reconfigurations that lean on the advances of green technologies and sustainable practices. In an effort to respect generational lifestyle and privacy preferences, differing and subtle design solutions were employed.

The resulting design of this 2,000 sf remodel and addition ties seamlessly into the architectural character of the original home. The remodel involved renovating the entire interior and exterior of the home and incorporating new spaces such as a breakfast nook and in-law suite above the two-car garage. The first floor renovation involved modifications for an open floor plan to combine the family room, kitchen, and breakfast nook. Further renovations involved updating the dining room, living room, and study. On the second floor, renovations expanded the primary bedroom suite and added two new bedrooms.

Silent Meditation Forest Cabins

Silent Meditation Forest Cabins

Located between Lake Bezdibene and the Ozolini buildings, a dynamic collection of cabins provide spaces for exploration, solitude, and focus. For those seeking internal balance in an increasingly fast-paced world, the spatial and physical qualities of each cabin conjure a greater sense of self and surrounding.

The cabin strives to touch the ground lightly, both in terms of physical construction and environmental impact. Constructed with vernacular materials, such as plywood and timber, the building is simple and easy to maintain.

Replicable and versatile, minimal adjustments to the orientation and apertures allow a range of experiences from complete exposure to isolated concentration. A central core accommodates the basic needs of sleeping, cooking, and creating while maximizing space for meditation and focus on a sky-lit platform above. Enclosed by a dynamic shell, the operable walls and windows expose the core to the outside, blurring the distinction between personal space and wilderness.

Wakefield Memorial Building

Wakefield Memorial Building

The goal of this 34,000 sf project is to replace the aged, existing facility with a state-of-the-art building that is equally inspirational as the original.  The design solution reclaims elements from the existing structure and finds creative methods of celebrating their rebirth by integrating them into the new architecture.

The design concept draws on three distinct elements for inspiration: the ‘sunshine lamp’, the ‘head frame/hoist building’, and the reddish-brown mineral ‘hematite’.  First, the central focal point will be the great hall; it is based on the earliest form of underground lighting – the ‘sunshine lamp’.  The iconic shape will allow for a three-story space with a grand fireplace that rises up through the copper-clad iron conical frame.  Second, the ‘head frame/hoist building’, once used as the workhorse of mining production, has been reinterpreted as the stage/production element of the theater.  Third, the living and working portion of the building will house the library, City Offices, Council Chambers, multi-purpose hall, and swimming pool.

Lakeside Retreat

Lakeside Retreat

Perching on the shores of Lake Geneva, this 5,200 sf family home imbues coastal elegance. The leading design criteria for the beachy vacation home located in a charming resort community in Southeast Wisconsin, involved incorporating shingle-style architectural character into a home suited for a growing family. The homeowners desired a lakeside retreat that was casual and inviting.

Special attention was given to instilling intimate qualities and moments within the spacious rooms that allow the family to experience the tranquil feel of a small lakeside home. The color palette, fabrics, wallcoverings, and artwork juxtaposed with coffered and beamed ceilings, tongue-and-grove details, and substantial millwork create a modern twist on the classic beach house by including nods to nautical themes in sophisticated ways.

Housing the kitchen, living area, and dining room, the main floor's great room owes its coziness in part to its materials and its open floor plan. The epitome of family-friendly, the great room provides the homeowners and their children space to relax and comfortably enjoy time together in this tranquil lake setting. The kitchen is highly functional for a family with three young children and who entertain regularly. Wrapped around an island, the free flow of family and guests easily transition to the living and dining areas off the great room.

The exterior of the home outfitted with large windows, detailed trim, and lake-view terraces and porches, is timeless and warmly familiar. The exterior spaces accommodate both formal entertaining and casually spending the day enjoying lake breezes. French doors connect the lake-facing front porch to the great room, while second-story balconies off a guest room and the primary bedroom suite take in lake views.

Mid-Century Treehouse

Mid-Century Treehouse

This single-family residence was originally designed in the 1950’s by famed architect Edward Dart, and is a fine example of Mid-Century modern design. Our efforts involved extensive rehabilitation work and two separate additions to the original home.

Rehabilitation and Phase I addition work maintained much of the essential original interior and exterior character, while expanding living areas, improving energy efficiency, and updating select finishes and mechanical systems. The Phase II addition was a more radical departure from the original structure, dramatically expanding the size of the home while maintaining its integrity through sympathetic, yet dynamic volumes.

Contemporary Ribbon

Contemporary Ribbon

This two story single-family residence is located on a prominent corner parcel close to the village center in a North Shore suburb. It is one of three similarly sized homes on adjacent sites, each with its own unique architectural style. This three bedroom, three and one-half bath home has contemporary exterior features, a combination of masonry and stucco walls, linear fenestration, and flat roofs accentuated by deep overhangs that enhance the structure's linearity.

The main vertical circulation bisect the building, topped with clerestory windows. This ribbon of windows also extends vertically at the rear, beyond the main rectangular mass of the building, where it terminates at the base of the second floor to form two exterior terraces which overlook the rear garden. The detached garage is designed as an integral component of the site composition, both shielding occupants from the street and adding structure to the raised garden terrace. The first floor features a living room, dining room, and kitchen. The second floor includes a master suite with two additional bedrooms. The finished basement has a recreation room and guest bedroom.

The goal of this banking facility was to create a historic feel and an architectural scale that would be appropriate in the surrounding neighborhood.

The building consists of two full stories, a full basement and attic; the main level houses commercial banking services; the second floor consists of the loan department, executive offices and board rooms; the lower level incorporates the main vault, employee spaces, and auxiliary storage; and, the attic has a multitude of functions, from providing additional storage space with access to mechanical equipment and the elevator overrun.

Sited on a full city block, the building’s traditional composition and high-quality materials draw on features found in nearby historic buildings. Work also included landscape design and coordination of all site infrastructure and interiors.

The project involves the development of an upscale residential community consisting of small hamlets accentuated with shingle-style architecture and landscape features that utilize ornamental trees, deciduous shrubs, brick, and limestone. The community’s 19 single-family homes provide a master suite on the ground level and range from 3,000-3,800 sf each including garage areas. The development involves four floor plan options. On the exterior, the homes showcase different treatment combinations each derived from a master palette of complementary materials.

This project provides housing alternatives that are reflective of current trends in the upscale housing market. These trends are focused on smaller homes within maintenance-free communities that offer first-floor master suites. As a result, the design for this development demonstrates efficient use of space by taking advantage of flexible floor plans and hyper-customized design. Because there is less ground to cover, these homes offer residents better design and higher quality materials.
